West Lake is often reduced to a boat ride and a quick photograph. That misses the point of Hangzhou. The lake is a landscape of shore paths, causeways, islands and hills, and the way you move between them shapes the day. You can visit from Shanghai, but a one-day plan works best when you choose a small area and leave time to look around.

Begin with the lake, not a checklist
Walk a stretch of the shore before deciding whether you want a boat. The changing view across the water makes more sense at walking speed. A cruise offers another perspective, but it takes time to reach the boarding point, queue and return. If rain or haze obscures the distant hills, enjoy the closer gardens and paths rather than chasing a postcard view that the weather will not provide.
West Lake is a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape, shaped by people as well as nature over many centuries. The causeways, pagodas and gardens are part of that history. This helps explain why a lakeside walk is more satisfying than ticking off disconnected landmarks around its perimeter.
Add one substantial stop
Lingyin Temple and nearby Feilai Peak form a different part of Hangzhou, away from the lakeside promenade. They are worthwhile if Buddhist art and temple spaces interest you, but a visit requires a separate transfer and time on site. A tea-area visit around Meijiawu offers yet another theme: cultivated hillsides and Longjing tea. Combining lake, temple, tea village, old street and a show in one short day can feel like a sequence of transfers rather than time in Hangzhou.
Decide which second theme matters to you. The West Lake, Lingyin and tea village tour follows one combination. The West Lake and Songcheng tour is a different, more performance-oriented day. Read the individual tour descriptions before treating them as interchangeable.
If coming from Shanghai
Check both the departure and arrival railway stations, then count the journey from your hotel to the station and from the Hangzhou station to the lake. The rail ride alone is not the total transfer. If this is your only Hangzhou day, a reasonably early arrival gives you a much wider margin for weather, crowds and lunch. Our train-ticket guide explains passport booking and station checks.
An overnight stay changes the experience. You can spend one day around the lake and another in the hills or temple area without continually watching the return train. If you are also visiting Suzhou, read our three-city itinerary guide before deciding which city deserves a night.
Hangzhou is most rewarding when the lake remains the center of the day. Choose the second stop deliberately and let the rest be flexible.
